There can't be much of a moon in the sky, - she said. All I see is darkness. If I move real slow, I can make out faint silhouettes but when I turn my head, they drift away. Everybody knows that with speed things easily escape. If I want to catch a butterfly, I better be slower than the wind. People forget about the quiet. To them it is meaningless and void. Only when I can hear my footsteps on the young grass, I will be able to feel the greatest sound on earth - the roaring rave of the universe. And I will dance to it like I have never danced before. When the bell rings twelve times and there is not much of a moon in the sky, you will know it is time to slow down and see.

Eventually, I conclude The way is the way. Without pretence, without hypocrisy, this makes a gorgeous last line to my letter. Harmless, yet merciless, like early dusk on a cold winter's day, it feels peaceful to know that it is time to leave, but I might as well stay. Eventually, I pack my few belongings in a bag. One person and a handful of stuff, nothing else distracts from the generic room. It could be a Paris hotel or a lodge in the heath, that's hard to tell. Another breath, a hug, and one more cup of tea, if you will; it does not make a difference anymore. I have never felt ready, so why would I now. Eventually, I pause for just a little while. Without want of mercy, I take a moment to realize that I don't need my keys. Busy but idle, like gentle ripples down by the shore of the lake, memories rush by, endlessly. They don't mind if you hold on or forget. Eventually, I understand nothing ever changes. Without the urge to explain, I draw a bird on blank paper, rip it in half. Like a warm meal in my stomach, this moment fills me with satisfaction. If there is no aim, does that mean you should not wait?

about

Jonathan Nagel’s solo work for contrabass and amplification takes the listener on a journey from chamber music to ambient electronica.

In three long-form compositions, set apart with spoken word interludes of recited poems, the work deals with desires, hopes and dreams. States of might and meekness frame the gradient from control to surrender.

The music is written for dance. In collaboration with three extraordinary movement artists, the particular physicality and visuality of each piece has been explored in its unique character. Photographs of the dance performances are part of the release as a printed photo book, and videos are provided digitally.

eventually concerns the perception of time: the title implies time invested toward an eventual goal. When you arrive 'eventually', it may not have been easy getting there, but the process has been all important. The titles of the threefold suite, for us - now - and, alludes to the metaphysical, a realm beyond any potential goals.

In an interplay of outrageous rumble and celestial melodies, various layers of sound create a complex soundscape. Out of the noise, time and again songs arise like angelic figures, giving shape and direction to the piece as a whole. In its implied juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary music, the work portraits socioeconomic and mental states of our times.

Originating from the classical tone of a warm and full-bodied bowed contrabass, the work aims to challenge the listener’s perception. Hardly noticeable at first, the sound gets cumulatively warped and morphed. Subtly, artificial sound manipulations are added to the acoustic playing. Through reverb, feedback frequencies and modulation, the sonic impression of the classical instrument gets enhanced and lifted into a hybrid electroacoustic realm. Similar to observing nature being altered in the context of the Anthropocene, the natural state of the acoustic instrument shifts to a multi-dimensional sound object during the performance.
